They would have just fit each other so well. And then Kurt could have been the screamer that Elliott was never.
ELLIOTT SMITH EITHER OR REISSUE INDIE HOW TO
So to me, I always thought, damn, if they made a band or if they had met, I honestly feel Elliott would have been like a younger brother to Kurt and Elliott would have showed Kurt how to tone it back and be more musical, and more subtle. And Elliott loved Kurt, and he loved Nirvana, and he would ask me about him. Music, to both of them, was the most important thing. They were both people who loved music so much, and they were both so incredibly similar, I think that the music they could have created as a team would have kept them alive. And that’s what bums me out so much, not just because of the fact that they both fucking died, but they could have been buddies and they might have even hung on for each other. I’m gonna go there now, I don’t know how Lennon and McCartney met, but if they hadn’t it would have been a complete miss of an opportunity. He would have gone to one of the shows, or they would have met somehow. And if fucking Kurt had just stuck around for a few more months, which was when Elliott had started to record, I know for a fucking fact that he would have adored Elliott. Released by Kill Rock Stars on limited edition yellow double vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve with additional live recordings and bonus tracks, insert of the original liner notes, a postcard of the original master tapes, and several never before seen photos. And when you’re talking about the loss, if Kurt had just fucking stayed alive for a couple of more months, if you look at the timeline and you look at where both of them were geographically, they were only like two hours away from each other. It's no secret that Smith dealt with alcoholism and addiction, but through his music you can see that he was able to experience love as well. The constant push and pull between the dissonant and melodic, dealing with today's disappointment and loneliness knowing that things could change tomorrow. Either/Or captures Smith's ability to play with that contrast beautifully.

His lyrics are as bleak and dark as ever, but the songs have a certain pop sensibility to them. The album, with the introduction of instruments aside from the singer-songwriter's guitar and voice, serves as a bridge between the lo-fi darkness of Roman Candle and Elliott Smith and the studio sheen of XO and Figure 8. 1997 was also the year that Either/Or was released. It seemed to be a surprising turn of events for both Smith and his fans. His performance at the Oscars was characteristically nervous but brilliant. 1997 marked a turning point in Smith's career, his music was featured prominently in Gus Van Sant's Good Will Hunting soundtrack, which led to the singer suddenly becoming the Oscar-nominated center of attention. To celebrate the album's 20th anniversary Kill Rock Stars has remastered the album from the original tapes and included additional recordings from around the time of the album's release. Just a string of indie bands coming through. There were years where it was a multi-day around the clock festival. There sadly hasn’t been a Yoyo a Go Go Festival in these parts in a good while, but they are the stuff of legend. Kill Rock Stars, shout out to Olympia!, have done the fans justice on this one by including 3 unreleased studio recordings and a B side.Īnd, it includes 5 live multitrack recordings from the Yoyo a Go Go Festival in Olympia, WA in 1997. Well, it’s been 20 years now and it’s time for the expanded deluxe reissue. He’s one of those “tortured artists” that I feel bad for. Either/Or has what might be my favorite Elliott song, Say Yes, and this album was my introduction to him. He wrote some of the most amazing and at times heartbreaking music of my teens and young twenties. Thinking about Elliott Smith can sometimes legitimately make me sad.
